We’ve made it!!!! We’re in the 2017 Good Beer Guide thanks to CAMRA members and Simon’s dedication to serving tip top ales.
Our thoughts on beer…..
Like the rest of Britain, Devon has seen a renaissance in the brewing industry with dozens of brewers making hundreds of beers, our beer policy is for ‘quality over quantity’ thus we serve only two permanent beers on handpull this, combined with excellent cellarmanship, means we can guarantee the freshness of our ales.
Permanent Real Ales:
We are renowned for having the excellent Otter Amber (4% abv) brewed by Otter Brewery in Luppit, Devon. A more recent addition to the bar is the new locals favourite; Church Ledge (4%abv) a late hopped IPA brewed by Geoff at Noss Beer Works in nearby Lee Mill.
Guest Real Ale:
During our busier trading periods we add an additional beer to the bar, this could be from trusted local brewers such as New Lion, Quercus or Teignworthy, or it could be from much farther afield (we have a passion for Yorkshire ales!!). At the last count we have had over 125 different guest ales on the bar in 2 years – if you have any requests or favourites talk to us and we’ll try our best to source it.
Cider, Lager & Guinness…..
Our new house cider is WildSider, a medium-dry, premium cider made with East Devon apples. Otter brewery have collaborated with Aspalls, arguably the best cider making family in the UK, to produce WildSider a premium and session-able cider (4.6% in strength). Plus, we always have a real cider available – usually from the West-country. Lager drinking friends have the choice of the ubiquitous Carlsberg or for the more discerning we are one of only a handful of pubs in Devon to stock Warsteiner – a genuine German brewed pilsner and no pub bar line up would be complete without ‘the black stuff’ – ours is always in tip top condition.
We Love Gin!!…..
And it would appear so do you! We have around 20 different gins in stock from the well-known such as Hendricks & Plymouth to the more obscure Monkey 47; a premium German distillation. Also gaining in popularity are West Country distillers, such as Devon based Salcombe Gin which is hand-crafted and exceptionally smooth, it includes grapefruit along with lemon and lime to give a great citrus taste. A family-run Cornish distillery Tarquins adds Devon violets to their small batches to produce a well balanced gin that is proving popular as is Conker Dry Gin from Dorset which they recommend just on the rocks. But, most people won’t try a ‘G’ without a’ T’ and we have Classic Schweppes or the ‘hipster’ Fevertree to mix… you decide.
Our wines are supplied by the excellent Christopher Piper Wines from Exeter. Expect the usual staples plus a few left-field choices. A new favourite is White Rioja and if you like a bit of Bubbly we’ve added a lush Crement de Loire to bring a sparkle to any celebration.
